Hall Pass

Rating: R

The Bouw-Man.
You can definitely make the case that the Farrelly Brothers have had a huge influence on the modern-day sex comedy.  1998’s “There’s Something About Mary” is the only “R-rated” comedy in the last 20 years to finish in the top five (it actually finished third in 1998), in terms of year-end total box office gross.  Hence, the filmmakers behind “Wedding Crashers,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “The Hangover” probably owe the Farrelly Brothers a “thank you” card for proving that these movies can be highly successful.

Unfortunately for Farrelly Brothers, they haven’t had a successful film since “There’s Something About Mary.”  Such disappointments like “Me, Myself and Irene,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “Shallow Hal,” “Stuck on You” and “The Heartbreak Kid” would make it very easy to dismiss any new entry to their resume.  “Hall Pass” appears to be your typical “guy fantasy” comedy for married men, as the main characters are allowed to explore their wild side for a week with no consequences (or at least that’s what the film is selling).  This rather stupid premise has the potential for some big laughs, but it also could just be full of cheap and lazy material.  More than likely, it will offer both to audience members.  If the big laughs outweigh the cheap and shoddy material, you have yourself a worthwhile film experience.  With the Farrelly Brothers recent history, however, there’s reason for skepticism.

Prediction.
Hard to predict where this film will fall, when the final weekend totals are posted.  There’s really not a lot of competition if you’re looking for some laughs, so it may very well exceed expectations.  Let’s say $19 million for people who want to leave their troubles behind, and don’t want to do a lot of thinking.

Opening Weekend Gross: $19 Million

Noodles: Prediction
Opening Weekend Gross: $16 Million
