The Bouw-Man.
Here’s the movie we've all been waiting for this summer. Enough of the sequels, animated fare and general garbage we’ve had to endure these past couple of months. Here you have an original story, tremendous effects, quality cast and a proven director. The trailer is perfect. We can figure out it has something to do with dreams, but it leaves everything else to the imagination. Hence, you want to go see it to understand its vision. Growing up, I never was a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio. Between “The Basketball Diaries,” “Titanic” and ‘The Beach,” he just seemed to be that pretty boy punk in high school/college that you just couldn’t stand. However, he has developed and matured and I now must give credit where credit is due. Not only is he a quality actor, but lately he has made really fine film choices. To date, “Shutter Island” is one of the best films of the year and from all indications “Inception” has a real shot of being as good or even better. On top of Leo’s recent track record, Christopher Nolan has demonstrated himself to be one of the finest directors in the business today. It all started with a fantastic independent film called “Memento” in 2000, and it can be argued that he has had one of the best ten-year runs in history. Well, enough of the hype. I can’t wait to see “Inception” over the weekend. Enough said.
Prediction.
If there are enough people like me who are sick of the same tired redone films, then “Inception” will do incredible at the box office this weekend. I’m a bit skeptical that there are still way too may “popcorn” movie fans out there who don’t want to think at the movie theater. Yet even “The Dark Knight,” a film as successful as they come, required that you use your brain a bit. Let’s hope people come out for this one, and this will cause Hollywood to invest in fresh ideas. $80 million sounds about right for opening weekend, but with good “word of mouth” it may rival the biggest money-makers of the summer.
Opening Weekend Gross: $80 Million
Noodles.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a movie picking juggernaut. He could re-educate Will Smith on how to pick good summer movie scripts. This movie is everything that all the other films coming out right now are not. Its original, mostly original, don't forget Dreamscape. Its special effects actually look more complex than random loud explosions. The story looks deep and engaging...And on and on.
After "The Dark Knight" Christopher Nolan quickly became one of my favorite directors because the man knows how to weave a story together. And when it comes to dark and edgy big budget film making, he's at the top of his game. Let's hope this one lives up to the hype and anticipation.
Prediction.
Its been hard to miss the amount of buzz this movie has been generating. Like I said with a couple notable exceptions DiCaprio has been pretty good at choosing great movies to be in, and this could be another one. Its still sci-fi which doesn't always bode well for movies in their opening weekend. I think this one takes the #1 slot but not by much, and then we're in for huge numbers over the next few weeks as word of mouth brings fans back again and again.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $41 Million
