The Bouw-Man.
How many times do they have to bring this character back? Do you realize that the original “Predator” came out 23 years ago? That’s right Arnold Schwarzenegger was 40 years old when he first went head-to-head with this creature. If you know someone who is excited for this latest movie to come out, please let me know because I would like to have a talk with them. Somehow they were able to coerce an Oscar winner (Adrien Brody), a “That 70’s Show” cast member (Topher Grace) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to star in this “horror” film. From the trailer, it appears a bunch of people are dropped into this jungle and although they are all deadly killers they become the hunted. Don’t they usually reserve this sort of plot for films starring wrestlers and other steroid-induced individuals who can’t act? Well, I will hold out hope that there is more here than meets the eye. Although most actors seem to have their price (doesn’t matter if the script totally sucks), it would be comforting to know they actually saw something in this story worth telling to an audience. Granted I personally have no interest in finding out what that may be, but it would be comforting nonetheless.
Prediction.
There seems to be enough people out there interested in thrills, horror and gore that they will sacrifice any resemblance of a worthwhile story to get it. With that in mind, I will give “Predators” at least a little due during its opening weekend in theaters. Let’s give it $25 million in guilt money for a tired old franchise that should’ve been put to bed a long time ago.
Opening Weekend Gross: $25 Million
Noodles.
When I first heard about them making another Predator movie, I had visions of the sadly disappointing AVP: Requiem. Now with this trailer as proof I'm hoping for a fan boys wet dream experience.
When I saw that Lawrence Fishburne, and Adrian Brody were both part of this effort I breathed a sigh of relief. Add to the mix Robert Rodriguez and I'm sold on at least one matinee ticket. Its like an alien abduction story on steroids. I only hope it can deliver the goods.
Prediction.
This is one of those tricky movies to predict. On the one hand its Predator so you have a huge following to account for. On the other hand, we've seen extensions of iconic characters come out this summer only to be met with poor reviews and weak box office numbers. (Nightmare on Elm Street anyone?) I hope this movie is good because I'm eager to see it, but even if it is, I think its in for a soft opening weekend.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $26 Million
