Resident Evil: Afterlife

Run Time: 1 hrs. 40 min.
Rating: R

The Bouw-Man.
This is the fourth installment of the “Resident Evil” film franchise.  I had to look it up since I have yet to see a “Resident Evil” film, since the original came to the big screen in 2002.  Maybe because actually sitting down and watching something like this is so far from my mind, but it seems to me they’ve been coming out at the rate of the “Saw” movies.  By the way, you should come back in late October for a pre-screening review of “Saw 7.”  Anyway, apparently with “Resident Evil: Afterlife” the world is dealing with a killer virus turning victims into the Undead.  I’m sure our hero, Alice (played by Milla Jovovich), will find some way to restore order and save the world once again.  If that gets your blood pumping, then by all means go see “Resident Evil: Afterlife.”  As much as I love going to the movies, I will focus on football this weekend.

I don’t know much about Milla Jovovich.  Since I want to sound somewhat intelligent when discussing a film franchise I’ve never seen, I looked her up on the internet.  Surprisingly she is younger than me, and has been making movies for nearly 20 years.  As I scrolled down her list of films, I realized I’ve only seen a handful.  Of those, only “Zoolander” would be classified as a “good” film.  It’s probably unfair, but the one thing I do remember about her was how she came to be cast as the female lead in “The Fifth Element.”  Ironically, my blog partner and I saw “The Fifth Element” together in downtown Cleveland back in 1997.  We were curious why this relatively unknown at the time would be given such a big role.  Later we found out she was “dating” the director, and hence her action film career was launched.  Not fair to judge, but you wonder where she would be today without “The Fifth Element” listed on her film credits.

Prediction.
The last two “Resident Evil” films made approximately $23 million opening weekend, and topped out domestically at a little over $50 million.  Both had mid-September release dates, so it’s obviously what the producers are hoping for with “Resident Evil: Afterlife.”  I’ll appease them, and predict once again a $23 million opening weekend for the fourth installment of the franchise.
Opening Weekend Gross: $23 Million

Noodles.
When I first heard they were making a Resident Evil movie back in 2001 , I had already been a huge fan of the video game. It was a groundbreaking title that forever changed the way gamers interact with survival horror. Once it was released I was pleasantly surprised that the story was fun, the action was intense, and I couldn't wait until part 2....Fast forward two sequels and here I am still excited to see what I imagine is the last of this series.

Resident Evil was always a little more than a typical zombie picture, boasting more guns and action than its more horror based counter part films. Now that they've added the true Avatar quality 3D to the mix I hope the story can hold up to the special effects.
At the end of 'Extinction' they set up that there was an entire army of Alice clones just waiting to be born into the world and from a couple of the shots in the trailer it looks like they are keeping to that storyline. It just makes me wonder where this ride is going to end. Does Alice just go around kicking the crap out of the Umbrella executives? Are those same execs using the T-Virus to enhance their own bodies? (Notice the one guy's red eyes when he removes his glasses) I don't know but I want to.

Prediction.
This summer has been absolutely horrible for action movies, even established franchises. What would have been an easy $23 Million a few years ago, seems like a harder stretch now. Add to that the additional cost of the 3D ticket...My prediction is that this one under performs its previous sequels and finishes the weekend just shy of $20 Million.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $18 Million
