The Bouw-Man.
It’s hard to get excited about something you’ve seen over and over again.  I realize with the “romantic comedy” genre you are dealing with a lot of the same themes in pretty much every occurrence, but it seems like so many of these films aren’t even trying to be original.  Maybe it’s because the success of a “romantic comedy” usually falls on the likeability and chemistry between the two main characters.  Story becomes a secondary entity, and unfortunately that’s the nature of the business.  I can’t speak to the chemistry between the “Life as We Know It” stars based on a two and a half minute preview, but likeability is something a little more obvious.

It’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of Katherine Heigl.  “Knocked Up” garnered my first impression of the actress, since I don’t watch “Grey’s Anatomy.”  I had no problem with her in “Knocked Up,” although she wasn’t a big part of the reason I enjoyed it so much.  However, after listening to her give numerous egotistical interviews and seeing her play the “poor soul” role in “27 Dresses,” “The Ugly Truth” and “Killers,” I can really do without seeing her in another film again.  As for Josh Duhamel, I can only go off of what others (strictly meaning women) think of him.  My co-workers and sister all think he’s the best (code for they think he’s “hot”), so based on this small bias poll study he passes as someone women like.

Prediction.

Heigl’s “Killers” and Duhamel’s “When in Rome” were bashed by the critics earlier this year and rightfully so.  Maybe they got together for “Life as We Know It” to try and salvage 2010.  Despite what I personally think of Heigl, her films have made money.  Her last three films, in which she was the star, have averaged over $22 million as an opening weekend domestic gross.  The October opening may hurt her latest, but obviously she has a core audience that wants to see her on the big screen.  $14.5 million is a safe prediction for this work disguised as an original effort.

Opening Weekend Gross: $14.5 Million

Noodles.
I'm not the biggest Katherine Heigl fan. I find that her "I'm so beautiful yet can't find a man" act gets old for me. Make no mistake that I find her very attractive, but not as awkward as her  various movie personae would lead you to believe. That being said, I find this trailer promising if your desire is to watch a pleasant romantic family comedy.

I like the premise of leaving two unrelated people in charge of an orphaned infant, although any real parent would probably balk at the idea. I like the chemistry that Katherine and Josh seem to have, and I'm hopeful that the inevitable resolution which will see these two beautiful people fall madly in love will be somewhat satisfying. Here's hoping.

Prediction.
If this were a movie starring two bigger stars I would say this would be a very large opening. But in this instance I think we're in for a mediocre weekend.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $15 Million
