The Mechanic

Director: Simon West
Rating: R

The Bouw-Man.
Whether you like Jason Statham or not, you pretty much know what you’re getting when you go see one of his movies.  I can’t say that I’m a fan of his work, or for that matter most of the “tough guy” action films that rely on stunts, special effects and action sequences to make up for a lack of a good story.  However, I do appreciate that there is an audience for this sort of mind-numbing entertainment.  I know a lot of people who really thought “The Expendables” (another Jason Statham vehicle) was tremendous.  For me, it was just like any other “tough guy” action film with an “us against the world” mentality.  Ben Foster is Statham’s sidekick in “The Mechanic,” and on paper that seems to be a miscast.  Foster is decent actor, but it would appear that he’s not a good fit for a film of this nature.

The most enticing thing about “The Mechanic” to me is that part of it was filmed in Detroit.  That’s probably not a reason to necessarily go see it, but it does add something to its appeal.  Based on what I’m seeing from the preview, Jason Statham is an elite assassin (“Mechanic” is code for assassin) who is looking to avenge his friend’s (Donald Sutherland) death.  Ben Foster represents the son of the decease, and there you have your action stars.  I’m sure there are people in high places that need to be eliminated, so there you have your plot.  The trailer pretty much tells the whole story, but action film diehards might want to check it out for themselves.

Prediction.
The number $12.5 million seems to stick in my head when I’m determining how much “The Mechanic” will make this weekend.  Who am I to go against what my head is telling me.
Opening Weekend Gross: $12.5 Million

Noodles: Prediction
I think this is a re-make of the Charles Bronson classic. If its half as boring, and twice and interesting this could be a decent flick.
Opening Weekend Gross: $15 Million
