The Bouw-Man.
Nicolas Cage’s recent financial problems have been pretty well documented in the press. As a result, “Drive Angry” is the fourth film we have seen from Cage in less than a year’s time. The previous three (“Kick-Ass,” “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Season of the Witch”) were nothing tow rite home about, so one could conclude he’s taking just about any role to obtain a paycheck. This particular entry looks to be cross between “Ghost Rider” and “Gone in 60 Seconds,” so at least he’s sticking with something familiar. I believe the “R-rating” is a positive sign, since now the material doesn’t have to limited by “PG-13” standards. If “Drive Angry” allows Cage to breakaway from the typical “good guy” role and let him be raw, then fans of some of his vintage work should be pleased.
The producers are really pumping the “Drive Angry 3D” version of the film. Just did a search of locations and times for this weekend, and there aren’t a lot of options for people who don’t want to see it in 3D. With 3D ticket prices considerably more than regular prices, you wonder if this will have an adverse effect on its box office take. I don’t think this is the sort of “can’t miss” film that warrants a 3D price tag. Sure, films like “Alice in Wonderland” “Toy Story 3” and some other animated/special effect driven films make the 3D experience special and worth the extra money. However, I don’t think this one qualifies. Hence, it may be a tough sell to ask audience members to drop $10-$15 (depending what time and where), to see “Drive Angry.” I’ll give it $17.5 million for this weekend, but I think this is one case where 3D may hurt the film’s total gross.
