The Bouw-Man.
Although this will assuredly be classified as a “chick flick,” the trailer lends to believe that it could be so much more. Based on the popular novel, the film has an opportunity to influence a whole new audience with its message. Julia Roberts may not be the greatest actress in the world, but her popularity is undeniable. Putting her in the lead of this portal into one woman’s life-changing experience, seems to be a smart move for everyone involved. Most of us at one time or another has at least thought about leaving our everyday lives behind to do something completely against the norm. Although it may seem irresponsible, it has a chance to be extraordinary. Only a small percentage of us actually go through with it, but I think we still want to see someone go through the process. Enter “Eat Pray Love.”
Everything seems to be in line for this to be successful both critically and financially. The preview itself made me excited to see it, even though I don’t fit the demographic. With all the problems that “Sex and City 2” ran into earlier this summer, I’m sure there are a lot of females looking to attend a film more tailored to their tastes. Adventure films that involve traveling overseas are relatively common in today’s film landscape, but very few are truly memorable. I don’t see any indication from the trailer that this won’t be a worthwhile experience all the way to the end.
Prediction.
“I am woman, hear me roar.” I think the female demographic will come out in droves to see “Eat Pray Love” during its opening weekend. There will be some males accompanied them, but look for a huge discrepancy across the board. $50 million will be its initial haul, but look for this one to have a nice long run through the end of September to the tune of $150 million.
Opening Weekend Gross: $50 Million
Noodles.
How can you not love Julia Roberts? You see her on screen and its like coming home to an old friend. When I saw the trailer for Eat Pray Love, I said this it...this is going to be the big hit of the summer. Its optimistic, its colorful, its stocked with excellent actors, and it boasts a powerful message. Plus this is the first "chick flick" this summer that feels like anyone could enjoy it.
Prediction.
I'm one of the few men that I know that loved "Under the Tuscan Sun" so my views may be a bit skewed here. I think this movie will own the box office this weekend. I don't think its going to do blockbuster numbers but definitely $40+ Million.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $45 Million
