The Bouw-Man.
Michael Cera is one of those actors whose good in small amounts. His soft-spoken, clever dialogue gets very old to me when the film reaches the one-hour mark. The problem is they keep making films with him in the lead. It’ not his fault, but he just seems better suited for a supporting role. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” seems like it could go one of two ways. It may very well play as a groundbreaking, modern-day film experience. It may also be nothing more than a ridiculous excuse to do something completely absurd.
To be honest, I’m on the fence. The “over-the-top” special effects and graphics may really entertain a select teenage demographic, but with films like this it’s much harder to attract a mainstream audience. Having a straight forward plot like the main character (Cera) needing to defeat his girlfriend’s seven evil exes to win her love, seems to be a positive point. If the dialogue supports the irony of the situation, there potentially could be a lot of humor sprinkled around the action sequences throughout the film. There are some recognizable supporting players like Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman in the film, but the chemistry between Cera and newcomer Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be the key component.
Prediction.
Can’t say I’m all that excited to see it after viewing the trailer, yet if the reviews are positive it may be one to see on a slow day. What about you? Like I said, it’s a tough one to predict. I’m thinking it will enjoy some modest success, but not enough to really make a statement. Let’s say $15 million opening weekend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m really off.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $15 Million
Noodles.
If it wasn't for Edgar Wright directing this film I think I would have absolutely no interest what-so-ever. When I first saw the trailer I had to wonder what in the world the film was could be about. Its colorful, and looks silly, and the "league of evil exes?" But...as a huge fan of both Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead I was anxiously awaiting his next film.
Prediction.
As much as I'm looking forward to this movie I think my original impression will be the popular one. Micheal Cera is a talented actor but this one feels like its going to open with around $15 Million, but as word of mouth grows it will finish strong. I'm going to give it $20 Million just to be optimistic.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $20 Million
