The Bouw-Man.
Jennifer Aniston’s film career would make a very interesting case study. On paper, it would appear she is willing to star in any “run-of-the-mill” romance comedy or drama. Does she work cheap? Does she tell her agent to take anything and everything offered to her? Obviously at age 41 her days of playing the relevant romantic female lead are dwindling. She basically plays the same type of role in all her films, and subsequently very few of them would be considered monetarily successful. So what is it? It seems the producers of these films would be better serve to try some new blood, because Jennifer Aniston films at this point can be lumped together into one mundane category.
Whenever I see a preview of a film that seemingly tells the entire film’s story in two minutes, part of me is curious to witness it first hand. There has to be something more, right? Does the producer really think outlining every key plot point in the film’s trailer is a smart move and will help generate interest? Isn’t leaving something to the imagination a good thing? With so much competition out there, the casual moviegoer needs a reason to see a film at the theatre and outlining the script isn’t helping. Do you know anyone who looks at the CliffNotes before reading the entire book?
Well, since I talked about it already here’s the preview synopsis: Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman are friends. Jennifer Aniston wants to have a child, but doesn’t think Jason’s negativity will correspond into the proper DNA. Jennifer Aniston holds a pregnancy party, where Jason Bateman gets drunk and dumps the donor’s sperm (Patrick Wilson) in the sink. He in turn fills up the cup with his own sperm. Years later, Jennifer Aniston moves back to New York and her son seemingly resembles Jason Bateman. Jennifer Aniston begins dating the sperm donor, but Jason Bateman realizes he has feelings for her. Will he disclose his feelings and tell her the truth about her son? I think you already know the answer.
Prediction.
“Love Happens” made roughly $8 million during its opening weekend, and “The Bounty Hunter” made about $21 million. So, based on the latest Jennifer Aniston barometer, she averages about $14.5 million. Since this is a “comedy,” I’m going to give it a slightly better than average mark of $16 million opening weekend take.
Opening Weekend Gross: $16 Million
Noodles.
The premise of this movie almost strikes me as a plot line for an HBO original series. A drunken sperm switch, and a boy meets, be-friends, loses, but eventually gets girl romance story. Then add a cute kid that looks like he smartly written without being a little pain in the ass to watch on screen (Is that a compliment? I honestly can't tell right now)
I think this is the artsy film that Jennifer's agents let her do so that they can force her to do another movie like Bounty Hunter next year. It seems smart and funny and could possibly be a hit over the long haul.
Prediction.
I really like Jason Bateman in almost everything I see him in, and while I don't think she's as "awe inspiring" as most tabloids would say, Jennifer Aniston can be a charming actress. That being said, this movie will get lost in all the noise of the other movies coming out this weekend.
Opening Weekend: Gross: $8 Million
