The Bouw-Man.
I was a little surprised they made a sequel this one. It must have a very good following abroad, because usually a film that makes $47 million domestically doesn’t offer enough to warrant a second helping. Despite employing the talent of two Oscar-caliber actresses like Emma Thompson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, “Nanny McPhee Returns” will most definitely rely on magic and childhood wonderment to make the story gel. No doubt several jokes will be made at the expense of the title character’s appearance, namely her mole and single tooth. However, I’m sure nothing too objectionable will be muttered by any of the main players. Overall it looks like you have a pretty harmless British family picture here, with plenty of injected family values for children to think about and discuss.
Maybe if I was young lad myself, a film like “Nanny McPhee Returns” would suit me just fine. Instead, after watching the trailer, I can’t help but yearn for the days when Julie Andrews was the nanny of choice in “Mary Poppins.” It may be unfair to compare the two, but “Nanny McPhee” seems to be inferior in every single way. Not only was “Mary Poppins” beautiful, but she sang a catchy tune as well.
Prediction.
This summer has been flooded with family films, so some are going to fall by the wayside. I’m sure “Nanny McPhee Returns” will get relatively high grades from critics, I don’t think it screams “must see” to an audience. 3-D animation is ruling the family film genre these days, so anything short is in real jeopardy. $12 million for the poor man’s “Mary Poppins” seems to fit.
Opening Weekend Gross: $12 Million
Noodles.
The first Nanny McPhee film turned out to be an enjoyable movie for both me and my kids. However, I only found out this little fact when it came on cable. The trailer for this one seems like they took most of the same gags from the last movie, (she gets less ugly as the kids learn lessons, etc.) but slightly less charm. This feels like another one that I may find to be a good movie five months from now when it shows up on HBO.
Prediction.
I enjoyed the first Nanny McPhee, but it wasn't a movie I would care to watch repeatedly with my kids. This time around I'm less impressed with a rehash of the first movie so I'll lower my expectations for a strong opening.
