The Bouw-Man.
The western genre has really come back around at a time when you might not think there would be much relevance. I think the person everyone owes for this rebirth is Clint Eastwood. 1992’s “Unforgiven” put westerns back in the fold, and the last 18 years has shown a consistently light dose of this genre in that frame. For this latest example, the most popular film-making brothers (the Coen Brothers) take a shot at remaking a classic. The great John Wayne won his only Oscar for 1969’s “True Grit,” so comparisons are going to be plentiful. I guess if you’re going to have anyone reprise the Oscar-winning role of “Rooster” Cogburn, you might as well bring in last year’s Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges. It’s going to be unfair to debate over whose characterization is better, so hopefully the public can look at each actor’s performance separately.

The Coen Brothers haven’t missed too badly with anything they’ve produced since they burst onto the scene with 1984’s “Blood Simple.” With that in mind, I would foresee “True Grit” being at a minimum a decent film. The best western of the last decade in my opinion was also a remake. 2007’s “3:10 to Yuma” starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale was a tremendous effort, and most would say that it exceeded the original. I think the Coen Brothers “True Grit” has the opportunity to do that exact same thing.

Prediction.
For all the success the Coen Brothers have garnered, big box office receipts aren’t one of them.  Their last wide release, “Burn After Reading,” did just over $19 million opening weekend and around $60 million domestically.  Even their Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men” came in at $75 million domestically, which doesn’t compare with some of the other Hollywood heavyweights.  They’ve been advertising the film pretty well, so let’s say $22 million for “True Grit” opening weekend.
Opening Weekend Gross: $22 Million
