The Bouw-Man.
For me, Jack Black is best used as a supporting actor with little bursts of comic relief. He was great as a music store employee in “High Fidelity” and as a drug addicted actor in “Tropic Thunder.” When I see him as the marquee headliner, however, I tend to worry. His talents are pretty limiting, and he relies on yelling and childish humor for the majority of his laughs. It works a little bit here and a little bit there, but if you’re seeing it consistently during a full-length movie your head tends to spin. With this latest effort, Jack Black is certainly hoping for some “Night at the Museum” magic where special effects combined with amusement throughout will appeal to the masses.
The latest version of the infamous 18th century novel, “Gulliver’s Travels,” pits an ordinary travel writer taking an assignment in Bermuda. Somehow, he ends up in a place where he literally towers over the small citizens. With this change of events, the title character will most assuredly present “God-like” powers to the citizens and become a national hero. I’m guessing from the trailer the talented Emily Blunt will be his love interest, and Jason Segel is either a rival or friend. The visuals don’t seem to be all that great, but hopefully it’s more impressive seeing it in context. Overall, I think you know what you’re getting with a Jack Black film of this nature. You’ll just have to decide whether that’s good enough to fork over your money this holiday season.

Prediction.
After last week’s surprise “Yogi Bear” bomb, I’m not sure how to predict a box office total for “Gulliver’s Travels.” Assuming that it isn’t going to open to rave reviews, it better have a big teenage and young adult following to make up for the inflated budget. I’m guessing a $28 million payday makes sense, and that will probably anger the producers who I’m sure have higher hopes than that.
