The Bouw-Man.
I think we all know at least one crazy white girl, so the material seems to be pretty relatable subject matter. So if that’s the selling point, “The Roommate” should have no problem finding an audience this weekend. I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but the two main characters in “The Roommate” look awfully similar. I’m hoping it has something to do with the storyline, because if not it’s a mistake in casting. The psycho girl in this film is Leighton Meester. I know very little about her, but she seems to be popping up all over the place. Since I never have seen an episode of “Gossip Girl,” my only impression of her comes from her work in “Country Strong.” It will be interesting to see if this film elevates her to a star, or just makes her another “twenty-something” woman trying to stay relevant in a competitive industry.
There have been a lot of films that come to mind when you see a teenage thriller flick centered on a disturbed chick. However, I can’t help but think of Alicia Silverstone in “The Crush” and Jennifer Jason Leigh in “Single White Female” when I took in “The Roommate” trailer. Both involved obsessive behavior, and all indications from the preview show a similar trend in “The Roommate.” Since we’re in the digital age, I’m sure if there are any heart-stopping scenes they will be more consistent with today’s society. All and all, you can probably predict what it’s going to be like to watch “The Roommate.” It’s pretty much the equivalent of a “guilty pleasure.” Whether that’s enough of a reason to go see it, depends on what you use as a criterion in your film choices.
Prediction.
I think “The Roommate” should draw enough high school and college kids in to see it this weekend to make it a mild success. Let’s say $20.1 million, because there really hasn’t been a film tailored to this demographic since we entered 2011.
Opening Weekend Gross: $20.1 Million
Noodles: Prediction
Feels like an also-ran cliche of Single White Female, Obsessed, Fatal Attraction, I could go on but I won't.
Opening Weekend Gross: $11 Million
