One of the most common storylines for a romantic film, whether it is a comedy or drama, involves looking past a person’s physical appearance to see their true inner beauty. It’s your basic “Beauty and the Beast” scenario, and it’s been done so many different ways that you would think someone would feel guilty to make yet another version. The preview for “Beastly” looks as bad as its lead character’s transformation. I can’t imagine any filmgoer, who isn’t a love-starved teenager, making an effort to check out “Beastly” during its theater lifespan. Fortunately for the producers of this film, there are probably enough “love-starved” teenagers out there to warrant an adequate opening weekend box office take.
I’ll give it $8.5 million this weekend, but I hope the general public uses some discretion and let this one die quickly. As Jay Sherman from the television program “The Critic” used to say, “If the movie stinks, just don’t go.”
